Two Men Sat…
Two men sat down to a meal
Both known in society, both accomplished
Both once in service
One in military, one in civil
One divorced, one widowed
Both, fathers once husbands
Both retired, well attired
Where one was poor, the other had money
Where one refused to deal, the other refused to heal
To the world they seemed fine, always smiling, joking & towing the line
Yet both were lonely, withdrawn & unhappy
One let his pain devour him from within
The other let his sorrow engulf him and wallow
Alcohol & cigarettes kept one’s loneliness at bay
Anti-depressants and worldly pleasures let the other while away
She tried for she loved one & empathized with the other
But she could only watch, be there in her own little way
For the saying of her father’s friend once stated & thereby fated
May this be something we never have to say
“We are our own enemy”
Tis us not they, who destroys ourselves everyday
