Masks

He masked his face with no 1

The Daily mask

Smile, nod and look happy

His day was the same, mundane

He met up with some friends

Put on No 2 on top of 1

The Machan mask

Superb. We’re all cool and rocking like that

No emotions, no sappiness, no bullshit

He met his girlfriend

Put on mask No 3

The Macho mask

Yea I’m your life, love and guardian of Asgard

I live for you and all that jazz

He left for home

Weary & exhausted and put on mask No 4

The Good Boy mask

Yes Ammi, I am the saint on high

No Thaththi, I would never lie

He went to his room & looked in the mirror

Peeling off one mask at a time

4, 3, 2, 1

Till there was none

But himself

Smiling, frowning, happy, sad, angry, blissful, excited, embarrassed, nervous, anxious, jealous, confident, weak, brave

And so much more…

And he thought, ‘But where is the real me??’

No mask can ever truly portray the real he

Reality came crashing down as the face in the mirror seemed to say,

Masquerades can be fun

But not when your daily existence is one
