A Jagged Coconut

‘Thwack!’

The manna came down hard on the bare coconut

Splitting it along a jagged line in the centre

It’s supposed to be straight

The water dripped through the clinging fibres onto the ground

The water is usually drunk or used to cook

Today it was being soaked by the parched soil

I put the blade of the manna in between the two halves

And pried them open

White inside

Luscious

The edges were still sharp though – split and broken – hard to hold

I was getting it ready for the scraper

Scrape to make pol sambol with?

Onions, chillies, lime, maldive fish, garlic, pepper, salt, chilli powder

A mix of many things and a beautiful result

A jagged coconut can still bring forth

A thing of beauty

Once the pain of its jaggedness is past
