Your Ego vs Your Body

“Son your ego is writing checks your body can’t cash” – if anyone can remember this epic line from Top Gun the movie, you will remember that it was said to Maverick for his rather reckless endeavours.

As admirable as it may seem – certain things in life need to be heeded with care and caution. And one of these things is one’s health.

There have been many instances of late where young adults have been dying of heart attacks or similar conditions. When you dig a bit, you find that these people were monetarily successful, holding high ranking positions and some were even very fit. Yet their lifestyles were filled with stress, no proper sleep and in some instances, disregard for existing health conditions.

Yes we are a pill popping culture that hopes a pill here and there will solve our issues. Truth is that long term the only answer is lifestyle change. We are living in a time where hustle culture and corporate whoredom are glorified as pinnacles of success. This could not be further from the truth. No clear boundaries with work, internet and the constant obsession with phones and tabs have bred us into being addicted to screens and thereby endless clutter. Precious few are able to tear themselves away from the rat race. We have now become system rats running on a treadmill to nowhere fast.

In this melee it is not surprising that one’s body gives out at some point. Lack of sleep is one of the biggest health issues coupled with poor lifestyle choices, substance addiction including alcohol & cigarettes and a mania to win at all costs. As resilient as our bodies are there is only so much abuse they can endure. If you take a car and run it the way people treat their bodies, that machine ain’t surviving for long. Yet people treat their vehicles far better than they do the machine that keeps them alive.

Money cannot buy good health or bring back the dead. These are harsh realities we need to accept though many think making big bucks and having private suites at hospitals like Mount Elizabeth in Singapore will tide them through – it won’t.

As I have told many, your boss / company will replace you next week, your family can’t. Be wise.
