The Old & the Bold

‘Naaki vissey’ is a good Sinhala line to explain the desire by older people to be flirty, especially with people young enough to be their children. While this may have been the norm 60 years ago, it is rather presumptuous for the old & the bold to be assuming that every young person they meet would be interested in a romantic relationship with them.

I have unfortunately encountered quite a few characters of this nature who I would comfortably sit alongside my father in vintage and elderly status. Yet, these men, in a wayward bid to be desirable and youthful, seem to foolishly believe that the likes of me would find them attractive. I have half a mind to tell them that I don’t have Daddy issues, let alone Grandpa issues, but I am polite and instead have chosen to give them a wide berth and a cold shoulder. Yet, these emotionally immature beings with the EQ of a gnat, are unable to grasp this basic understanding. It explains why a lot of men don’t understand basic consent and expressed interest. They assume being friendly equates being romantically interested, when it is not.

Yes, there are women who desire men much older than them and who actively seek them. I have under no circumstances actively sought old men. Yet they seem to think that they are eligible and desirable to me when they are anything but. I honestly wish the men of my generation had half the guts these old bats have in this sphere. These are the lessons they should have learned from their fathers instead of blustering around with material things and an ego built on fluff.

Another part of me wishes I had the audacity of these old men – to think that they would be desirable to a person who is beyond their league. Now I am mustering that courage because this blasé behaviour by the old & the bold has given me confidence to see myself in a much better light.
