Owl Opinions

Pseudo Activism & Mob Mentality

Many people are blissfully self unaware. They seem to relish in their damage – purported and genuine – without really seeking to remedy it. These are not the poor – these are the privileged. Lazy but loud. Opinionated with endless criticism and zero action.

They unfortunately plague one on social media – particularly the X feed. Dear God. What a cess pit the Lankan X sphere truly is. With less than 2% of the online population on this platform, the self declared activists, self-righteous, damaged and fucked up seem to relish in the pseudo attention they get and create to fill up their clearly mundane lives. I have been plagued by some of these wannabes on and off and it is quite tiresome if not entertaining in some instances.

The best are the ones who labour under pseudonyms that hark on shorteats, semi precious stones, gods and some inadvertently displaying their true selves through these very names. I am reminded of the days we created Hotmail accounts – I had a very bold statement of my name, a number and the word rulz. Coz I felt like that – at 16. On X, one is plagued with adults of varying ages and pseudonyms behaving like they are 16. And frankly it’s sad and tiresome.

Since X is not my platform of choice for social media interaction, I am happy to venture off and on when I feel the need. And I have observed over time, how cult and mob like the rather jobless accounts are where they feel the need to jump into every conversation, poke their two cents’ worth about everything and basically make a spectacle of themselves in self-righteous indignation. For all you know these may be politicians having a good laugh but I don’t think even they are this jobless.

No, these are the pseudo intellectuals, the pseudo activists and the sanctimonious humbugs. They are experts at typing garbage and yelling insults but come a good day and they would not dare say half the crap they do to one’s face. Oh no, that is not the nature of the true keyboard warrior. They hide – often behind their jargon and pseudo activism.

You see their true colours when they harshly gang up on someone whose opinion is contrary to theirs – a true online mob. But then they would be screaming for democracy, equality, reconciliation, co-existence – all mere words for them since their actions are in total contrast. These apply only if you are on their side of the argument.

They are the woke of today – woke when it comes to others but not themselves. Blinded to their own folly and screaming about triggers. Majority need an asylum and the rest of us need therapy to deal with them.

It’s a symptom of our times and its rather telling of how much nobodies are trying to be somebodies, online.
