Know Your Achilles’ Heel
As humans we all have weaknesses or what we can call our Achilles’ heel. This could be inherent traits, certain hangups, insecurities etc. Anyone pretending they have none or that they are immune, are delusional. A weakness is inevitable but learning to be aware of it and handling it can make it much more manageable and makes one a better human being to be around as you become more self aware.
Of late, I have noticed so many people, especially those who are emotionally unaware of themselves and those around them, and who live a very surface level existence, behaving in unexpected ways because of a trigger. And this trigger is often one that is quite ordinary or mundane and it triggers a reaction from the core of that person’s being in a way that makes their behaviour unimaginable at times. This is mainly because most have never looked inward to understand themselves and have instead projected this image of themselves onto themselves. However, our true selves cannot be covered up no matter how hard we try. In this light, getting triggered and acting on that trigger is very problematic. Sometimes these incidents are detrimental to one’s life and future.
Hence it is prudent to seek professional help in figuring out one’s self, being self aware and addressing those triggers. If you don’t know yourself and what your weaknesses are – Achilles’ heel in a sense – these will be sought by others and used against you. And this happens time and time again.
Yes, we cannot know everything that could trigger us. But if you are emotionally mature and you are self aware to an extent, you will figure out that you have been triggered and why that is. This Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is very important, especially if you are to lead a team or even a family unit.
Today, more than educational qualifications – EQ is standing out as an important factor in leadership precisely because managing people is key to ensuring success in life. And without EQ, you will go thus far and no further.
